The list below represents some amazing work by various artists who have made their work available to the general public for a variety of uses. These icons are all free. There are literally hundreds of websites that will sell you icons that are royalty free for whatever purpose you desire. However, royalty free does not necessarily mean free — you still have to pay for whatever it is you want. This is because with royalty free items, the creator retains all copyrights and publishing rights. You, the average web guy, simply purchase the right to use and publish the items as specified under the terms of usage (you must agree before you can buy). Usually, these terms include a provision to not sell derivative works nor redistribute the content. Royalty free sounds great, but it isn’t truly free — it costs money.
Enter the Creative Commons (CC) license, General Public License (GPL), and the Lesser General Public License (LGPL).
All offer differing levels of ownership and attribution rights to the original work as well as provide a mechanism to allow people to give away their intellectual property for use to the public. I am not a lawyer (IANAL), this is simply how I understand it (TISHIUI).
Each artist has a link to their homepage, the license of the released work, and an attached sample of what you can download by following the named link. Note that what you view doesn’t represent the entire work, only a small portion of it to give you an idea of the icon style.

Great! I used one of those for my website’s one-and-only graphic. There are countless sites proclaiming that they offer “free icons” or “free web clipart” — but check the fine print, and in no time you’ll find that they’re not free at all.

Great list. I am hoping to release a new download for my ‘Silk’ icon set soon, which should take the total number of icons in the silk set alone up to 1000; While the Creative Commons licence I use specifies that attribution must be given, I am normally happy for people to use them without written credit given a nice email/message (Clients can be fussy about splashing unrelated links everywhere, I understand that all too well).
As for the Flags and Mini set, they are actually public domain/free icons, they require no attribution and have no licence.
And I apologise for the Mini set. They’re like the child I never wanted, the result of a drunken one-nighter.

Great list. I found myself looking for the same thing about a year ago, without much luck. There’s been a lot of great design work for OSS within the year!

Truly great service you have done to ‘armchair’ bloggers and website creators! I have been looking for free icons for my blog, but just could not get anywhere. Either due to the lack of ‘free’ stuff and whatever was available just wasnt bothering about.

320 14×14px transparent background icons free for personal, website, commercial use… if you use more than 10 in your site/app/whatever, you have to link back to them, or you can just get a license for $30 and forgo the whole linking back to them thing.
Very nice for inline usage on websites… not up to famfamfam Silk standards imo, but still amazing for tiny icons.

I am still not clear about those license types and what they stand for. I have read ‘em several times, but they are still not clear to me.
Are there any of the license types that makes it ok to include icons in commercial templates for either normal websites or cms sites?
If someone would explain it to me in normal words I would be very happy!

See, some icons listed here are icon Themes, not icons themselves. Icon themes change the look of certain icons, and you probably need KDE or GNOME to use them, then you need to find the icons on your computer, and even then they mignt be in a wierd format, or stored in some dark corner of the web.

This is in realation to the colorcons icons, they are part of this index. Other icons by the same designer as colorcons, I think.
