Introduction: Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery
The total number of blogs out there passed 50 million a month ago. 175,000 new blogs are created every day. There about 5.3 million blog postings per day, seventy percent of which are actually ’spam’ from a splog. In other words, seventy percent of all blog postings are spam (State of The Blogosphere, 2006). This plugin helps blog owners stay vigilant against unauthorized content use by the overwhelming majority of blogs that are splogs.
Introduction | Installation | Download
Splogs are weblog sites which the author uses only for promoting affiliated websites. The purpose is to increase the PageRank of the affiliated sites, get ad impressions from visitors, and/ or use the blog as a link outlet to get new sites indexed. Spam blogs are a type of scraper site, where content is often nonsense or text stolen from other websites. [wikipedia]
Splogs scrape content from others and re-post the material as their own in order to earn money. Plagiarise, steal, swipe, lift, pinch… whatever you want to call it, splogging is easy and profitable.
One way splogging is made easy through Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds. In a nutshell, RSS feeds allow anyone to subscribe to your blog and have new content automatically fed to you in the background such that the subscriber can view your new blog post at his or her leisure. They also allow unscrupulous people to take your content and quickly and easily publish it as their own, filled with ads or keyword stuffed links pointing to another domain.
A splog is easy and extremely cheap to set up. For example, here is easy it is to set up a splog using wordpress:
- Install wordpress (famous for its 5 Minute Installation)
- Install AutoBlog plugin for wordpress (one of many plugins that take an RSS feed from somewhere else and allow the automatic reposting of all or part of it on the new splog)
- Select keywords and or insert ads and or create links
- Profit
Procedure: A thorn defends the rose, harming only those who would steal the blossom.
Caveat venditor: the wordpress plugin developed at MaxPower is an attempt to guard content from unauthorized use. We know that splogs scrape content from RSS feeds in order to get indexed by the search engines and (ultimately) rank higher for profitable keywords related to the products advertised. Splogs do this all automatically with minimal direction from the splogmaster.
To combat splogs use of your content, this plugin will place a digital fingerprint, customized and tailored by each individual user of this plugin, into blog posts. The fingerprint is only visible in the RSS feed, not on the website itself. For example, already I have included my fingerprint in this post and unless you are reading this in an RSS reader, you haven’t seen it.
Once embedded in your post, the plugin allows you to quickly and easily search the blogosphere for references to the digital fingerprint using Google Blogsearch, BlogPulse, and Sphere (see the admin screenshot, above). It also allows the quick and easy search for your digital fingerprint of the web itself using Google, Yahoo!, and MSN. An optional quick search can be included in the dashboard itself (shown below). Lastly, the plugin provides a few resources and links to places that will help you combat splog and spam should you find your content plagiarised or stolen on another website.
Discussion: To have doubted one’s own first principles is the mark of a civilized man.
Caveat Emptor: This plugin is an experiment meaning the outcome is unknown. I believe that this plugin is a good idea, but that doesn’t make it so. It may work exactly as advertised, but by now maybe the spolggers have changed tactics. Many splogs now just contain jumbled up sentences and meaningless tripe scraped from all over the place; a mashup of mashuped words. Will splogs steal and publish your fingerprint? I think so, but I don’t know for sure.
Do not keep trying out ‘digital fingerprints’ using the admin menu. I have apparently banned myself from using Google’s BlogSearch in developing this tool. I think I queried the service too many times in a short period.
This plugin employ’s the ButtonSnap Library by Owen Winkler. Buttonsnap allows the easy addition of buttons and functions to the post editing menu regardless of editor type and is used by a lot of WordPress plugins. Unfortuneatly, the Adsense Deluxe Plugin conflicts with the buttonsnap library resulting in no buttons showing up. I don’t know why the two can’t play nice together, but they don’t. Fair warning.
Google, Sphere, IceRocket, BlogPulse, and in fact all RSS search engines attempt to filter out spolgs and pings from spams. From one perspective, this is great because it makes it much harder for splogs to profit if they aren’t indexed or included in people’s search results. However, this also means that it becomes very difficult to actually find content being abused if the abuser him or herself can’t be found. Its a catch-22, they can’t profit and you can’t find them to assert your rights. Using Google Alerts and performing traditional (non RSS) searches might be the best way to deal with this situation, but perhaps there is a better one.

Presenting Digital Fingerprint, a plugin for WordPress.
Features:
- Set custom digital fingerprint to whatever you like;
- Handy dandy insert Fingerprint button to allow inclusion of Digital Fingerprint in Pages and Posts regardless of editor preference (works with both visual rich editor and the ‘original’);
- Digital Fingerprint is inserted into all posts in the feed only wherever the <!–fingerprint–> is found
- Easy administration via Admin menu;
- Integrated RSS search for your custom fingerprint using Google BlogSearch, BlogLines, Feedster, IceRocket, BlogPulse, and Sphere;
- Optional insertion of quick digital fingerprint search into the Dashboard using Google, Yahoo!, and MSN.
- Optional automatic insertion of digital fingerprint at either the start or end of the post, or at the end of the first paragraph of the post;
- Easy upgrade; the plugin will let you know when an update to Digital Fingerprint has been made available here at MaxPower.
Installation:
- Download the Zip archive and extract the entire directory to your local disk.
- Upload the entire directory (digitalfingerprint) to your plugins directory (wp-content/plugins/). If completed correctly, your directory hierarchy should look like so: /wp-content/plugins/digitalfingerprint/.
- Activate the plugin in the WordPress administration back end.
- Go to Manage -> Digital Fingerprint. The first time you view the page an error message will appear indicating that your Digital Fingerprint is blank.
- Scroll down to Digital Fingerprint Options and input a digital fingerprint. For guidance and help on choosing a fingerprint read, “Choosing a Digital Fingerprint that is right for me.“
- Once you have input a digital fingerprint into the box, hit Update Options and your Digital Fingerprint will be saved and the page refreshed.
Usage:
The next time you write a post, use one of the FingerPrint Buttons shown at left. If you use the Visual Rich Editor (TinyMCE) you’ll see the icon (courtesy of FamFamFam) and if you don’t, you’ll see the word “FingerPrint” as a button.
Additionally, if you don’t use the visual rich editor, you’ll see <!–fingerprint–> appear wherever your cursor is when you click the button. This is normal. By I suggest putting your Fingerprint near the beginning of the post, after the end of a sentance. Do this regardless of whether or not you publish full feeds or partial. For those of you who use an external writing program like Live Writer, simply type <!–fingerprint–> into your post to place the fingerprint where you want.
Once your post is published, only those people who read your blog via RSS readers will see your Digital Fingerprint. After a sufficient amount of time to allow RSS indexing services to index your content, you should see your work get listed in the Digital Fingerprint administration menu found at Manage -> Digital Fingerprint. It should be noted that the search results provided by the different companies often differ not only between each other, but also from day to day.
Should you discover cases of content theft using this plugin:

Thanks go out to Owen Winkler and his amazing ButtonSnap Class Library for allowing the easy creation of buttons in the post editor. Thanks also are deserved for Mark James for creating the very usefull and elegant series of icons found at famfamfam — the icon used by this plugin in the post editing page was designed and produced by Mark. Ja of Disconnectthedots also provided valuable feedback — thanks!

Interesting approach. I don’t see how it can stay ahead of the sploggers. The only fingerprint that is guaranteed not be cleaned is the content that is splogged.

Lloyd,
I’m not sure I understand your comment. Are you suggesting that the splogs will be able to figure out what your fingerprint will be and then delete it? If so, I find that hard to believe — its too much work. Regardless, only time will tell if this approach is worthwhile. Thanks for the comment.

Cool reference with the State of the Blogging Report… 70% of blogs are splogs, wow. The only mindblowing thing that wasn’t mentioned in that report is that close to the other 30% is made up of legitimate blogs full of regurgitated or otherwise redundant worthless content, capped off by an extremely miniscule percentage of blogs featuring actual original material that goes beyond whatever hot topic everyone else happens to be writing about at the time.
While they’ve fairly positive about only 8% of blogs not being detected by them right away, they’re 100% positive they don’t even know what a blog really is anymore (info recovered from an internal memo), so these numbers don’t mean a whole lot in reality. Luckily, bloggers don’t live there.
Thanks for the mention, bet you’re sorry now though.
To be serious, if nothing else these experiments are a good way to continue self-education and anything that brings attention to the very large problems we face on the web is worth the effort.
There has definitely been a serious lack of noteworthy challenges to the ease of splogging. Scolding them proved ineffective. At least taking some steps to make it more of a challenge, throwing some roadblocks in there, etc may curb any increase and give them a little trouble. Sure, they’ll refine their methods every step of the way but it’s better than just taking it laying down.

One thing I have already noticed using this plugin is that splogs are copying not only the content, but also the tags I use. Therefore, when I go to technorati I can find splogs by simply searching for a tag that only I use. Right now, it happens to be ‘MaxPower Features’ but in the future, I could tag everything with my fingerprint as well. The only thing is, I’m not sure how many splogs use the tag stealing method. Its so obvious it’s almost stupid.

I use EditorMonkey and it uses TinyMCE as the WYSIWYG editor. When I click on the fingerprint icon no code is placed into the editor.
When I use the plane WP Editor and click on the fingerprint button the proper code is placed in the editor.
Is there a folder missing that im supposed to place in the TinyMCE plugin directory or something?
The graphic button is showing in the TinyMCE WYSIWYG Editor, but it’s not doing anything when it’s clicked.

Hi. Nice Plugin! However I have two suggestions for improvements:
a) I tried to use “Original article appeared on BLABLA” as my fingerprint - where “BLABLA” was supposed to be a Link to my site. Doesn’t work, though. It just inserts plain text (no link) into the feed AND the config-page is corrupted (HTML injection, a.k.a. XSS-Bug
b) Even though you say that we should add the fingerprint somewhere near the beginning of the posts, I’d like to add it to the BOTTOM of EVERY post (so I don’t need to add “” manually). Maybe even something bigger, like a HTML-Table. Would it be possible to add this feature or do I need to write my own plugin?

MacBros:
I have no direct experience using EditorMonkey. The ButtonSnap class written by Owen Winkler provides plugin authors (such as myself) an easy way to add buttons to the wordpress admin without end users (you) FTPing files all over your WP install. I can have all the files associated with the plugin in one compact directory, nice and neat. Doing anything else is just seems inappropriate. One suggestion already made is to have the fingerprint automatically inserted in every post, this would get around your issue.
BLaM:
Right now, for safety’s sake, the plugin runs user input through a filter to get rid of nasty characters like < and >, so HTML currently won’t play. I’ll think about making it available in the next update. I will also address placement issues of the fingerprint with the automatic insertion option in the next update.
Thanks for everyone’s feedback, keep it coming!

Next I have my two cents here:
- You mix spaces with tab-stops, use tab-stops only. I guess you have tab size 2? Make it to 5 and then you will see what I mean.
- The plugin URL shall lead directly to the plugin’s main page (*this* page)

[...] WP Station has been victim of this for some time. Someone sets up a generic WP install, and starts scraping content from various blogs that offer WP news, tips, and tricks. They would come and go, and eventually the main culprit of WP Station content theft included links back to my site, so I didn’t think there was anything else left to do. In my hiatus, two new plugins have been introduced to help combat content theft. The first, AntiLeech, from Owen Winkler at Redalt, creates fake content for sploggers who use bots to steal content from your site. The second, Digital Fingerprint, from MaxPower, creates a unique “fingerprint” only seen in your RSS feed, so you can track your content on various blog search engines. From there, you can determine if the content is properly referenced, and take actions if not. I highly suggest reading through the explanations at both plugin sites to further understand the issues at play. [...]

David, while I think there is some ambiguity, I also think you are wrong.
Within the license terms I state:

So everything that follows is a condition of the above license.
The conditions of this license end on the last line of the license. One of the conditions was not selling it. I put a lot of hard work thinking and writing this plugin. I don’t want people to be able to download the code, and start selling it and ripping people off. You can do anything except sell the code outright, and even then the license says email the author for permission for anything else. I’ll make the next version more transparent.

I’ve been using the plug-in for a few days now. So far it’s only found search engine results linking to my blog’s pages. No content thieves yet. I have had some problem with my choice of fingerprint so I changed it. The problem probably has more to do with another plug-in? WP itself?
It seems WP doesn’t want me to input valid mark-up and/or style. Very frustrating as I can create valid pages easily enough. With the default, wpautop was removing my last closing p tag, textile 1 moves the last closing p tag to after a pair of div tags that it precedes, markdown totally bombs out. nl2br changes p tags to br tags, valid, but not what I want. So I settled on textile 2 which only removes the last pair of p tags but still results in valid HTML and CSS for the blog’s pages.
Anyway, back to the plugin. I wanted to use *Visit MysiteName* figuring it would look OK at the beginning of feeds (as opposed to a made-up word) but for some reson the “*”s were being stripped out of all the posts except the last one. Same for when I tried ~Visit MysiteName~ So I have settled on Visit MysiteName -
No longer are the “delimiter” characters being stripped out (along with the trailing whitespace which resulted in Visit MysiteNameThis is the post entry) and the feeds now look like Visit MySiteName - This is the post entry
Hopefully this info will be helpful to others experiencing any similar problems.

“One thing I noticed is that it is bringing up legitimate trackbacks.”
I don’t think its possible for trackbacks to show up in your list unless the website got your content by scraping it from the RSS feed. In that case, is it really a legitimate trackback?
I get fake trackbacks all the time. If the trackback text contains your fingerprint, and your fingerprint only exists in your feed… was it actually a person sending the trackback? I don’t think so.

Is there a reason that you included “MaxPower _ Digital Fingerprint - WordPress1159234443306.png” in the installation? Is it really part of the plugin?

James,
The file you have quoted does not exist in the file wp-fingerprint-B2.zip that is downloaded via the above link. Perhaps something got munged in your download of the plugin? Try downloading it again. Otherwise, thanks for catching that cosmetic error — those are my favourite to fix

Nice plug-in.
More importantly, you gave it THE BEST information page of any Wordpress plug-in known. Three cheers to you for that - I know how easy it is to say “if they care they will figure it out” or “it’s self-explanatory”.
Again, I cannot give you enough appreciation for documenting the plug-in both in-code and on the page.
I have made a modification to it to fit my needs: feel free to incorporate it, to improve on it (most likely) or to ignore (I’d love to know why then
My problem was that I wanted to use some of the funkier characters in my Fingerprint, like − (”minus”) or (”soft hyphen”) - when used improperly (say, minus instead of a hyphen) they create a wonderfully unique fingerprint.
Your code would not allow it since you check for XSS.
So, I made the following changes in digital-fingerprint.php:
97 // Filter the fingerprint so as to avoid XSS
98 /* $DF_the_print = htmlspecialchars($DF_the_print); -commented out by andrabr */
279 Set your Digital Fingerprint: “/>
That’s all. It does seem to be working.
It is VERY important to validate the feed with the fingerprint: things like   (”non-breaking space”) will violate the specs and make the feed unacceptable for all well-coded readers.
Maybe “Validate Fingerprinted Feed” would be a good addition to Beta 3?
I hope this helps someone - I can use some good karma

Oops!
My apologies - some (all) special characters in my last post got automatically “processes” out of existence. I emailed the code changes in - hopefully those will make it through.
“Soft hyphen” is “& #173;” (I hope it makes it through the filter now that I have inserted the space). Minus is “& #8722;”
Sorry for the garbled message. My fault.

One more bug: in line 291 you need to add “echo”, as in
echo get_bloginfo(’wpurl’);
otherwise it produces wrong output [from bloginfo('url') - do NOT ask me why, I do not know php], with is not noticeable unless the two values happen to be different like in my installation.
Happy to help

While was fixing the cosmetic problems pointed out by James I noticed an error in the Bloglines code block. If there are Blogline results the “dig deeper” link will use the wrong “space filler”. $DF_the_print_search_feedster should be $DF_the_print_search

As I have the Google sitemap plugin on my blog, I was wondering why Google hadn’t found any posts yet. I discovered an error.
$google_result = count($rss_google_bp->items);
should be
$google_result = count($rss_google->items);

MacBros zip extraction error and my question about “MaxPower _ Digital Fingerprint - WordPress1159234443306.png” are probably related to the unzipper we use. I use WinZip and the file isn’t shown in it’s list, but the error occurs and it can be extracted. I rezipped the contents without the file and the size changed from 125,433b to 125,377. I guess your zip prog picked it up somehow, but won’t show it to you.

RE: my post from Nov 24th, 2006 at 8:23 pm
The code changes I submitted are insufficient. It looks like it would be an uphill battle to properly input a unicode text into the fingerprint field and then URL-encode it and submit to the search engines. (Funny, imbedding it into the feed seems to work perfectly). This is way over my head
I really hope someone finds it to be an interesting challenge…

What I want to do on my blog, is every few hours take the oldest post and move it to the
front of the queue, all automatically. Anyone know if there is a plugin that can do this or
a simple way to set up another plugin to do this (use my own feed perhaps)?
Thanks.

The button for the insertion of the fingerprint code does not show up when my Visual Rich Editor is turned OFF. It does show up when it is truned ON though. I could just type in the code, but I am of the lazy type and like buttons. Thanks in advance.

This is a great idea, and deals with an issue that I am very concerned with!
I have a question, should I go back through all of my old posts and pages and added the fingerprint tag?

Is anyone else having a problem after install? I am so excited about this plugin and would love to get it set up, but after I go to install the page under manage it only says No fingerprint and then another thing about RSS, there are no places to enter a fingerprint, and I am unable to scroll down the page.

The digital-fingerpint.php file has this line in it
require_once(ABSPATH . WPINC . ‘/rss-functions.php’);
so if it can’t find the rss-functions.php file the script will fail.
Check your path settings and you could also test by temporarily changing “require_once” to “include_once” just to make sure that’s the only problem.

Hi.. yes I noticed the same extraction error message as a previous person commented about, saying a particular file in the zip couldnt be opened.. maybe that is why I cant get it to work properly after install?

4:24 pm
Thanks for your reply Mittineague .. I just looked at the digital-fingerprint.php file, and I see the part you are talking about.. require once, etc. I looked through the unzipped Digital Fingerprint file and there is no file within it with the name “rss-functions.php” - so I am figuring this is the problem.. does anyone know where I can d/l that particular file - has anyone else had problems with the zip file?
10 Jan 07
4:27 pm
ok here is the exact error msg I receive when I d/l and go to unzip the zip file:
“The following invalid filename was encountered in the archive: “digitalfingerprint\MaxPower > Digital Fingerprint - WordPress1159234443306.png”

The rss-functions.php file is NOT part of the plugin.
It should be in the wp-includes folder.
Did you check the paths for
ABSPATH - path to the WP install folder
WPINC - the wp-includes folder
I suppose you could try hard coding the path into that line of the plugin script instead of using the constants. But if you ever change the set-up it will break. It would be better to make sure your constants value’s are correct and use them.
10 Jan 07
8:15 pm
Mittineague, Thanks again for your reply. I checked and my rss-functions.php file is in the wp-includes folder.
In the digital-fingerprint.php file it says:
“ABSPATH . WPINC . ‘/rss-functions.php’”
So, I am assuming that is the right path? I did try putting the full url there just in case that was the problem, and it didnt help.. came up with a blank page under manage/digital fingerprint after that. So I put it back to the way it was and now, as before the manage/digital fingerprint page will open up but the only things on that page are:
A box with text inside that reads “WARNING: Digital FingerPrint is blank!”
And another box under that with text inside that reads: “RSS Blog Search”
No place to enter any information, and no ability to scroll the page.

I just read some comments on the updated digital fingerprint post.. I am using the latest version of wordpress, might this be why I am having the problem with the page loading under manage/digital fingerprint?
10 Jan 07

I am using Digital Fingerprint Beta 0.2 and WordPress 2.0.6 with no problems.
When you tried “include_once” instead of “require_once” did the page show the same both times?
10 Jan 07
11:04 pm
yes, it does the same exact thing with include or require
11 Jan 07
2:55 am
The “RSS Blog Search” is the last bit of HTML before the script enters a bunch of PHP code. It should help if you temporarily change error_reporting(0); to error_reporting(E_ALL); so you can see if there are any PHP errors.
13 Jan 07
3:34 pm
Noted that if you have some other RSS aggregators or for some reason, some plugin includes rss-functions.php already, the script breaks on a fatal error because class is already instantiated- (management page shows a blank page when going to teh manage digitalsignature section)
simple solution, comment out the line:
require_once(ABSPATH . WPINC . ‘/rss-functions.php’);
13 Jan 07
4:15 pm
Brian,
Im not sure if another of my plugins includes rss-functions.php already, the management page is not completely blank when I go to the manage digitalsignature section, but does only show two things:
A box with text inside that reads “WARNING: Digital FingerPrint is blank!”
And another box under that with text inside that reads: “RSS Blog Search”
No place to enter any information, and no ability to scroll the page.
By “comment out the line” do you mean, delete that line from the php code?
13 Jan 07
6:38 pm
If you comment out that line the script won’t be able to call the fetch_rss function. It may still write the fingerprint to the feeds (maybe), but the blog search page won’t be able to search for results.
I have the widgets plugin installed and it has these lines
[code]function widget_rss($args, $number = 1) {
if ( file_exists(ABSPATH . WPINC . ‘/rss.php’) )
require_once(ABSPATH . WPINC . ‘/rss.php’);
else
require_once(ABSPATH . WPINC . ‘/rss-functions.php’);[/code]
I do NOT have an rss.php file, so the plugin uses the rss-functions.php file.
AFAIK the “once” means that if the file is already included (already loaded into memory), it won’t get it again. If you are getting server errors from the line, I believe it is because the “require” failed.
I uploaded the current download version. Except for the changes posted previously having not been implemented yet, it works fine. I even changed error_reporting(0) to error_reporting(E_ALL ^ E_NOTICE) to check for any script errors. There are none.
If you have tried “hard-coding” the path, changing “require_once” to “include_once”, and deactivating your other plugins with still no luck, you may have a corrupt “unzip”.
Maybe download the plugin again and try unzipping it with a different utility.

Hwy, seems like a great plugin but when I go to make a new sig I get this problem:
WARNING: Digital FingerPrint is blank!
Then it says:
RSS Blog Search
and that’s it. There is nothing else on the page but those two things.

[...] I have now discovered that what I referred to in my recent post about Blog bots are known more commonly known as Made for Adsense or MFA sites. Apparently there is a bit of controvesy over these. Some people consider them creative revenue opportunities; others consider them scum. I lean toward the latter, not for their copyright infringement nature, but because they add no value. If they at least attempted to perform some kind of aggregation function, and cited the original blogs, I might be more supportive.It’s a funny irony that searching around for MFA information will land you at a number of MFA sites. That’s how bad they pollute the search engines.Google has apparently taken a negative view of these sites. In the cases where they are using Google Ads, Google gives an option to report these sites. Click on the ‘Ads by Google’ link and on the page that appears, at the bottom of the page, (somewhat hidden) is a link ‘Send Google your thoughts on the ads you just saw’ - click this and you can report the quality of the site. As a result, some of these sites have moved to Yahoo!/Overture or other ad networks. In fact, on some forums I saw people offering to buy sites that had been kicked off Google in order to switch them over to Yahoo! ads. On the other hand, Google makes money from them, so why should they care all that much.MFA originally referred to mostly static pages. Now there are “bot sites” with apparent content that is really just content taken from other blogs’ RSS feeds. These sites have been called spam blogs, or splogs (see: Google’s Continued Role in Splogs Monetizing Your Blog’s Content or Wikipedia), not to be confused with comment spam. There’s a plugin for Wordpress and splog templates to enable the creation of a new splog site in literally a few minutes, with very little technical extertise - no wonder there are so many of them.Digital Fingerprint and Anti-Leech (both for Wordpress) aim not to block scrapers accessing your blog - but instead they identify when a scraper has hit your site and feed it gibberish, just as Paul Westbrook had suggested in a comment to my recent post. I guess that’s what we all have to implement to get this to go away. What a pain. I expect this to become a lot more visible in the next 12-18 months, probably at least as big a hassle as comment spam was. [...]

Those are not errors, but “Notices” resulting from “short-cut” code in the WP files.
ie.
$tb_url = $_POST['url'];
instead of
$tb_url = (isset($_POST['url'])) ? $_POST['url'] : ”;
This is (dependending on circumstances of usage and the picky-ness of the author) acceptable code.
Note that the digital-fingerprint.php file is not in the list.
Just an idea, but did you upload the digitalfingerprint folder with it’s contents to the plugin folder, or the contents of the digitalfingerprint folder to the plugin folder?
# Upload the entire directory (digitalfingerprint) to your plugins directory (wp-content/plugins/). If completed correctly, your directory hierarchy should look like so: /wp-content/plugins/digitalfingerprint/.
As for the “WARNING: Digital FingerPrint is blank!” this is NOT an error message, but letting you know that you haven’t “set” a digital fingerprint yet. (which of course you can’t until the install is OK).

11:45 pm
Yeah but all I see is the warning and then that’s it. The page is blank other then the “WARNING: Digital FingerPrint is blank!”
There is no way to change the digital fingerprint.
I uploaded the entire folder to the wp-content/plugins directory.

I don’t think the mysql database is being made. Something is wrong when it installs as I could not find the installed database. Shame cause I thought your plugin could really help me. But I guess I am gonna have to settle with antileach.

Can we get this fixed? Antispam plugin blocks the googlebot from actually indexing the page correctly.
Sadly, I seem to always get plagerized by a varity of websites when I post something about a new deal or something.

Did you try it after disabling all your other plugins? I tried different ways of “breaking” the script on purpose to see if I could get what you describe to happen, but with no luck. The only other thing I can think of that might be causing a problem is a conflict with the template. Does it mis-behave the same way if you try other templates? What template are you using?
17 Jan 07
11:10 pm
I think it’s a problem with the plugin as I am not the only one experiencing it. Nothing shows up under the digitalfingerprint window other then:
“WARNING: Digital FingerPrint is blank!”
But there is no way to change it, or modify it.
Nazimova also has this problem too.

I use vistered little, and this is the admin interface. I can’t disable all plugins (that’s insane [I have like 45 and only 2 have to do with the admin panel]) when I disable the 2 I still have the problem.
I think it’s a problem with your plugin making mysql entries and injecting css.
17 Jan 07
11:29 pm
oh no wonder you can’t see it.
You are using WordPress 2.0.5 and we (both?) have 2.0.7
Hah, how silly.
18 Jan 07
12:54 am
It is not my plugin but maxpower’s. I am now using WP ver 2.0.7 and the digital fingerprint plugin works fine for me. Because there are 2 of you experiencing the same problem does not mean that the plugin is a fault. It means that most likely you have a common factor in play. There are a lot more people using this plugin that don’t have a problem with it. The reason I suggested that you temporarily deactivate your other plugins a few posts back is because although plugins work with “vanilla” installs, third party script can introduce conflicts.
As nice as it would be to ask a question and get a “Do ABC, then XYZ” answer to your problem right away, if you want to use this plugin you will need to do some trouble-shooting. If you don’t want to take the time to actually find out where the problem is, don’t surmise that it’s anything other than your lack of perseverance that’s at fault.
You need to temporarily deactivate (NOT uninstall) all your other plugins and see if digital fingerprint then works, if it does, gradually reactivate the other plugins until one of them breaks it again. Then post back here letting me know what the other plugin is and I can look at it and hopefully find a solution. If it still doesn’t work, then it may have something to do with your template, so again, which template are you using?
18 Jan 07

I just told you it’s vistered little. And oops. I just contacted maxpower because I thought you were him. Hillarious. Nice one for me.
Anyway, none of the other plugins seem to have any effect on digitalsignature. I disabled most of them (spare two or 3 I know aren’t doing it). and still nothing.
18 Jan 07

Hey! Ok I deactivated every single plugin I have installed and re-downloaded/reinstalled digital fingerprint and tried it out again.. still the same result.. the digital fingerprint is empty and the rss thing.. nothing else on the page, and no ability to scroll.
18 Jan 07
3:24 am
Sorry, I saw “vistered little” but thought is was some kind of a typo and not a theme name. I downloaded-uploaded it and tried it out. DF still works OK for me. When you look at the page’s source is the last bit of HTML
WARNING: Digital FingerPrint is blank!
RSS Blog Search
and that’s it?
18 Jan 07
10:20 am
Yes. I have said that quite a few times.
18 Jan 07
1:27 pm
The page isn’t taking my posts with HTML tags written as entities to show the tags instead of parsing the mark-up. Maybe code tags will work:
WARNING: Digital FingerPrint is blank!RSS Blog Search
What I was interested in is what mark-up you see in view-source. Do you see the legend tag that comes after the “RSS Blog Search” closing h2 tag?
Anyway …. give me some time and I’ll write a version of the plugin with debugging code inserted into it for you to try.
18 Jan 07
6:15 pm
A made a debugging version of the plugin. It also has the fixes for the few errors I know about that are in the script. Either click my name above this post or go to www dot mittineague dot com slash temp slash digital-fingerprint.txt
Then rename it to php and try it out.
18 Jan 07

Here is what I got:

18 Jan 07
11:07 pm
This is an odd one for sure. The empty textinput array doesn’t cause a problem with the maxpower feed, but it breaks with Google’s. In fact on my page all the textinput arrays are empty except for
[textinput] => Array
(
[title] => search
[description] => Search on Feedster
[name] => q
[link] => http://feedster.com/search.php
)
If it broke on the maxpower feed I would think maybe your rss-functions.php file was corrupt.
I tried changing my fingerprint to ” empty to see if it broke, but it still was OK.
The only thing I can suggest at the moment is to try disabling the plugins you didn’t deactivate before just to make sure it’s not one of them. Ill sleep on it a hopefully think of something, but I must admit I’m at a loss at the moment.
18 Jan 07
11:15 pm
Oops, Nevermind all that, I just went back to the page again. The first time the png didn’t load all the way so I thought it ended at the textinput array. The fact that it made it through the DEBUG stuff is encouraging though. Step by step it will be narrowed down to the culprit.
19 Jan 07
12:09 am
I think I may have it. The legend tag is usually used with a fieldset inside a form. It may be that this unconventional use of it for unordered list headers is breaking in your browser (let me guess, Safari or IE7 ?) although it “works” in mine.
Anyway, I’ve changed the script so that the legend tags are replaced by h tags. You can find it by clicking my name above this post or by going to www dot mittineague dot com slash temp slash digital-fingerprint.txt
Hopefully this will work and then you can remove all the DEBUG stuff and be good to go.

Well, at least you’re getting the feeds OK from maxpower, google, blogpulse and sphere.
I made another DEBUG version. I commented out the DEBUG display stuff.
I see that icerocket, feedster and bloglines still don’t show in the DEBUG print_r-s. It may be only the first, icerocket, that’s causing the problem, but I also commented out the fetch_rss calls for the other 2 just in case either of those might cause a problem too.
The new file’s at the same place. (fingers crossed, knock wood)
20 Jan 07
12:03 pm
Don’t spose you know if this will be WP2.1 compatible do you?

11:41 pm
Mittineague you are a genius! It worked! Thank you so much!
21 Jan 07
2:11 am
That’s good to hear. Keep in mind though, that the file has the fetch_rss calls to icerocket, feedster, and bloglines commented out. This means that as it is, if there are results from those feeds, they won’t show in DF’s ACP. But you could still “dig deeper”. And I still wonder why it broke for you. All 6 blog feeds return rss ver 2 xml so they should all get processed the same way. The script’s fetch_rss calls are in this order
maxpower
google
blogpulse
sphere
icerocket
feedster
bloglines
So why did you get the first 4 OK but not the last 3? Icerocket has a language tag that they don’t have. But I really suspect that it was feedster at fault here. If you request
http://www.feedster.com/search/type/rss/%22%22
which is the initial “no fingerprint set” fetch, it returns a bunch of porno.
You may have some kind of porno firewall or the like that was breaking the script. If I’m correct about this, once you have a “digital fingerprint”, you should safely be able to un-comment out those calls and be OK. It also means that the script should have a default fingerprint other than empty “” and test against that. eg.
if ($DF_the_print == ‘default fingerprint’) {echo ‘WARNING: Digital FingerPrint is blank!’;}
so that feedster’s porno won’t break for others too.
Thanks for your perserverance with getting this worked through.
Ain’t Beta testing fun
21 Jan 07
3:47 pm
Rather than having a default $DF_the_print, I put the fetch_rss calls in an if-empty-else.
Even if my theory about the porn is incorrect it shouldn’t hurt any. I took out all the DEBUG stuff (leaving in the other fixes) and the file can be found by clicking my name for this post or by going to www dot mittineague dot com slash temp slash digital-fingerprint.txt (rename txt to php before you upload it of course)
I’ll leave it there until the next version of DF comes out.

hey! I just uploaded the file and its working for me now too!! Now I just have to follow the rest of the install instructions to set it up.. could you explain more about what you were saying about icerocket, feedster, and bloglines??
So glad its working now.. thanks!
22 Jan 07
3:34 pm
“explain more about what you were saying about icerocket, feedster, and bloglines??”
I had made a version of the file with DEBUG code in it to help find out where it was breaking. The fetch_rss function was available. And it was returning values from the maxpower, google, blogpulse, and sphere feeds OK. But as could be seen by MASA’s screenshot, the icerocket, feedster, and blogline feeds were not making it through the DEBUG code. My first instinct is to fault the first of those called (icerocket) as being the source of the problem. But as the fetch_rss function instantiates objects, I think it is more likely that the second (feedster) was returning the porn before the icerocket feed was returned and caiusing the failure. Although possible, it is unlikely that all 3 of those feeds would break the script. This could be determined by selectively commented out each of them in turn. But at this point I think it would be more helpful if you could say what, if any, porn firewalls etc you are running that may have halted the script. As I mentioned, the script runs fine for me even with an empty fingerprint, so this is my best guess as to what is the critical difference may be.

[...] My real loss was a plugin that I liked quite a bit until I upgraded my blog to 2.1 a few months ago. I’m not a plugin author, and, frankly, I can’t make a theme without a guideline. This one is based on another, as the footer will show. I know that I’ve modified it heavily, but the structure is essentially intact. I only had trouble with one plugin - Maxpower’s Digital Fingerprint. The plugin functioned all along, but the admin page would not display. Along comes 2.1 final and the admin page appears, miraculously! So, it was an issue with Wordpress - not the plugin. [...]

Is this plugin compatible with Wordpress 2.1?
02 Feb 07
8:24 pm
Running v 0.2 and WP 2.1 - the plugin is activated, and the options page is all filled out, but I have no icons on either the TinyMCE or Code pages, nor is it inserting the code automatically at the end of the post.
Could there be something I missed in the install or is it not 2.1 compatible?
Thanks

No icons at all? If you deactivate DF do the icons show? I’ll bet they don’t. After I upgraded to WP 2.1 my RTE was gone. I had to upgrade my subscribe2 plugin to get it back. As best as I can figure out by what I’ve come across while searching for an answer to my RTE problem, it seems that the WP 2.1 tinymce doesn’t play well with buttonsnap. The new version of subscribe2 made things OK again. If you have other plugins that use buttonsnap try upgrading or deactivating them.
If you mean only the DF button, then I don’t know how to fix that, I saw in the bug tracs that the next version of WP will fix things.
I have DF 0.2 and WP 2.1 and the DF plugin did insert the fingerprint at the beginning of my last post and it shows up in my feedreader OK. So as best as I can tell DF 0.2 has no problem with WF 2.1 (except the button problem).
Of course without the button, if I didn’t have it auto-insert, I’d have to enter the string “” where I’d want it to be, a pain, but not impossible.
02 Feb 07
10:05 pm
oops, the string is <!–digitalfingerprint–>
02 Feb 07
10:09 pm
double oops, make that <!–fingerprint–> Without “digital”
03 Feb 07
12:56 am
It was just the DF icons/buttons that aren’t show up. It’s started working now w/the auto-insert, so it’s all good. Thanks!

Only one question.
To assert one’s rights does not really accomplish anything does it?
I mean the only way to truly assert one’s right to their copyright is to sue in a court of law. That cost is very expensive. Is the content worth the cost? Not likely.
It seems that copyright legislation is actually quite a bogus bunch of laws anyway as very few people can afford to pursue copyright protection in court.
Sploggers, full well knowing this, simply ignore any complaints. This is why scolding them has not worked.
The same scenario has been with us in the form of email SPAM for a long time. Laws were written, nothing much changed. We all still get spammed and have to devise ways to combat it in our email clients.
I see know way in reality to stop or even inhibit splogging until one can devise a way to prevent the display of content on any IP address other than the original IP address where it was posted. This of course is not possible if we are to have RSS. Even if RSS didn’t exist, such a scenario would require wholesale change in the entire function of browsers, routers…everything…the entire Internet.
While I admire your efforts, I don’t know what purpose it serves to know where your content is being used, other than to make you angry
It will be a rare splogger that pays any attention to one’s assertion to copyrights unfortunately. Unless of course they’ve splogged Sony or Coca Cola or some other corporation with very deep pockets.

[...] The Solution: Digital FingerPrinting Well apparently I am far from the only person with this problem, and though I’m not by any means a great writer, my thoughts are my own, and my thoughts they shall remain! Maxpower has published a plugin that will help you with discovering the content thieves of the web and even has recommendations on how to take action so you can effectively put SPLOGS out of business. It actually imprints a digital fingerprint in your RSS content that makes it easy to search the web and discover if anyone is using content that came from the sweat of your brow! Had I only known this back then. Read a preview from the article. [...]

[...] The best way to find out if your content is being stolen is to create a digital fingerprint and search for it on Google. If you use WordPress I highly recommend this plugin. Basically you create a unique identifier (some sort of code) that will appear in your RSS feed. 9 times out of 10 the code will also appear on splogs, so you can easily find it via Google. If you can’t think up a code use some sort of encryption tool, enter your name or your websites name, and encrypt it. Usually the code will be so unique that it will be nowhere else on the entire Internet, so finding it via Google isn’t a problem. [...]

Now, click update. Once again, that’s it. You have the option of searching for your phrase from the DF page in your dashboard along with links to some useful copyright related information. [...]

I’ve installed the plug-in but I don’t see the digital fingerprint button on either the Visual Rich Text editor or the code editor. I also had to manually put in the code because I didn’t see any indication that the code was being placed in the post. I use the TinyMice Advanced plug in which should not keep the button from showing up in the code editor. I’ve also checked the box so that the plugin would automatically insert the code. BTW, I did try deactivating the TinyMice Advanced plugin but it the button still did not appear.

This plugin was written because of the enormous amounts of spam postings across the internet, State of the Blogosphere 2006 says that sevent per cent of all blog postings are spam. If this WordPress plugin, helps eliminate just some of them with users reporting the splogs, then maybe we will all benefit from a much better internet community. [...]

Kirk;
First, let me tell you that this is a fantastic plugin and I will donate. As a creator of original content, I was unhappy with some of the copyright plugins. I thought: hey, why not a watermark or something? And Google delivered your plugin on a silver platter. Yay.
But not yay. Although DF works perfectly on my pro site, it’s giving me a fatal error on my humor blog and I’m simply not capable of determining why.
I feel a little sheepish asking for help, since you give this thing away and all, but I’m at a loss here.
Wordpress (latest update) tells me DF can’t be activated because it caused a fatal error.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Uh . . . problem solved. I forgot all about the crack tech team called “GOOGLE” so I looked it up, deactivated cforms, and DF started up just fine.

Nice idea. Unfortunately, the latest generation of content rewriters can ’spin’ (or ‘wrangle’ as it is now known) way past the point where even a human could identify the original source. So the fingerprinting idea, though good in theory, is now no longer valid.
